jia ba bui? evolved from its collage counterpart when it was deconstructed.
In Hokkien, “jia ba bui?” means “have you eaten?”, a question my great-grandmother (pictured in the portraits painted) poses to me a lot, and the only full sentence in the dialect that I understand every word of.
In this performance/participatory work cum installation, I sat at the table asking people who passed by if they had eaten, and if they wanted to have lunch (which I cooked) with me. Over the duration of the multiple lunches I had with various people of different backgrounds, conversations were had about food, culture, and “home”.
jia ba bui? seeks to explore the connections between people beyond language and different culture, and through the use of meals.
