Taking the form of a food truck-style menu, nice to meat u is a concept exploring the ideas of translation and mistranslations of culture through the idea of food.
Dishes from different ethnic groups and cultures were directly translated, resulting in the menu presenting dishes which simply read “meat”, with not much else for the viewer to go on, and leaving viewers confused. While the umbrella term “meat” is used in different languages for their respective dishes, a lack of careful understanding of culture results in a mistranslation that obscures further meaning and confuses its target audience.
The concept was also presented as a participatory work within Animal Crossing: New Horizons, where viewers who had the game could interact with the work by “ordering” something off the menu and receiving a custom design of the dish.
